Surprisingly good. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery, even though it was written almost 100 years ago. The unnamed narrator tells about an unexpected adventure he finds himself in while investigating something else entirely.

I love how this one kept me interested and guessing. These are two of the most important features of any mystery or sleuthing story. I also like how the curiosity of the main character lands him in such an unlikely and awkward situation. I loved the way the details are revealed and the characters are well drawn and interesting.

The downside is that it is a bit old, and as such, it can be a little tough to read in parts. But, only a little. I couldn't figure out all the sayings, but I enjoyed trying to do so. It's like looking through a window into the past, and I must say it was much easier to read than Wuthering Heights, though I was reminded of that other work.

The lack of cover art and the bland title didn't offer any incentive to pick this up on their own. In fact, I, like some of the others who have read and reviewed this story, picked this up solely to satisfy the X in an A-Z reading challenge. But, overall, I'm happy with it and glad I did pick it up.

Overall, I really liked this. It's a short, somewhat humorous mystery. The historic element is a draw as well. Fans of mysteries or historical fiction, particularly those who like both genres, will likely enjoy this story.

What an odd little mystery! Old-fashioned and a quick read. A bit more intriguing at the beginning, but entertaining nonetheless. It
Not my typical read to be honest but i need a book that started with X for my a-z challenge.

Im not sure I liked it it was very short and the writing was very different.
This book was written almost a century ago, and it's interesting to see the differences in writing styles from today's mysteries.
Nice little mystery novella. The story was much more simple than what I expected as the beginning seemed a bit confusing.
This is a very easy to read book, short and sweet. Well written and explained. I enjoyed reading this book.
Anna Katharine Green wrote approximately 40 mystery stories in her life time. She lived from 1846 to 1935. This story, X Y Z A Detective Story was written in 1883.

The lead character, a detective employed by the government, is on a quest to find a money counterfeiter. He travels to a small Massachusetts town after hearing about some suspicious looking letters. While he is questioning the postmaster, he learns of the Benson family and their super secretive lifestyle. They are rich and reclusive. The detective feels there is something amiss and switches his investigation to them - the letters and counterfeiting is dropped. (This all happens in the first 5 to 10 pages.)

At times I liked the story. It was a page-turner in the beginning. Unfortunately it quickly bacame predictable and rushed.

This ebook is roughly 800 locations. It was fine, but not great. One thing that bothered me immensely was the fact that Green never named the detective. Not once. Why is that? Perhaps he is a will known character in her other books. I'm not sure.

Green has a great talent for drawing characters and scenery. I will definitely pick up more of her work in the future.
Interesting look at life over 100 years ago! AKG'S books usually have a twist, and her criminals are almost never discovered by means of circumstantial evidence. This is a short *clean* novella which can be read in an evening.
