Few Christians today spend much time reading the prophetic books of the Old Testament. Yet these books are a brimming treasure trove of wisdom, insight and inspiration. These books should serve as a source of deep conviction for all manner of spiritual weaknesses. Yet we seem to have trouble relating to these books. We don't like to delve into the struggles of the Jews as they were threatened and defeated by more powerful, surrounding nations and dragged off to captivity for decades because of their different sins and idolatry. We'd like to think we are not in danger of such perils.
David Whitney has come up with a brilliant solution to this dilemma. His new novel is a captivating, page-turner that makes each of the prophets come alive in today's world. The contemporary struggles of the characters in Whitney's novel come under the penetrating gaze of each of these prophets, who speak God's wisdom to them in a life-changing way. And the life experiences of each of these prophets has provided a pungent way to look at our own issues in light of the great wisdom of each of these men of God.
The book also includes a companion study guide at the end. It recommends specific passages to read and includes a number of questions designed to stimulate small group discussion. This book is a much needed addition to Bible study literature. And its fictional accounts make it an entertaining, uplifting read.
When I opened "Prophets at the Door", I began reading in the middle of the book. I was looking for material about the Old Testament book of Hosea, because it was on our church reading list. So I turned to the chapter entitled "Hosea" and started reading. It was immediately apparent to me that this was not a commentary, where one consults an appropriate chapter. I realized that I had jumped into the middle of a story, and I eagerly went back to the beginning to find out what the book was all about.
As one can learn from the description on the book cover, "Prophets at the Door" is the story of a 21st century Bible study group which receives visits from the sixteen writing prophets of the Old Testament. The prophets come alive to the reader as they tell their stories and interact with the group. It becomes more and more obvious, as the visits continue, that the prophets' messages from God have not lost their relevancy.
This book is perfect for all of us who have frequently skipped over the prophets, preferring to stick with "more interesting" parts of the Bible. For anyone who has considered the prophets to be "dry as dust", there are many discoveries to be made. As the fictional characters come to realize, God's message is eternal, and for those who will open their hearts, there are many life-changing treasures to be found in the Old Testament prophets.
I have known and admired David Whitney and his wife Judy over the past six years, and our relationship motivated my reading his book. Having each prophet visit a modern Bible study group, describe the history and politics of the time and quote familiar portions of their writings--all in a novel--was not only deeply appreciated by the couples who were visited over several weeks in the story but also greatly appreciated by this reader. The prophets have much to say that is relevant to the 21st Century and I wish more ministers were speaking about the issues they raised so many years ago. I have now purchased copies of this book for myself and for members of my family.
