I was impressed with the author's skill at weaving a very well written and researched tale which kept me fully engaged. The characters were beautifully described and the plot, although somewhat difficult to follow at times, was as good as any on the bookshelves of Barnes and Noble. As a professional proofreader, my only gripe was the numerous amount of typos and grammatical errors scattered throughout the book. I was completely sucked in to this novel. There are obvious social undertones woven in to the story that made me care about the ending while enjoying a great story. I can't wait to read more from this author.
This book is an exciting and entertaining romp through a fascinating universe! I finished in two sessions because I was dying to know how it ended. The characters are engaging and You really start to care about them. The steampunk aspect was under emphasized, but still well done. The genius is leaving the steampunk to your imagination rather than overly detail. A great debut novel and I can hardly wait for volume two!
Overall, a good story. The ending leaves the reader wondering what happened. The various events do not explain themselves in this novel. Perhaps the next will give us more insight.,
The historical research that the authors have put into this novel shines through. The portrayal of an alternate present where the US never decisively split from the British Empire was also excellent.
It took me a while to engage with the main characters, and I think the text could have benefited from an editor's input to fix up the grammatical problems and tighten up the text flow. On the whole, though, once the story got underway I was hooked.
I'm looking forward to more of Odette Speex and company!
Impressive first novel, which kept me inthralled and was extremely hard to put down. The author has done thorough historical research, has developed strong characters, and made me eager for the next installment. I was sad to see this chapter end.
Any fan of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series should begin this series immediately.
After I finished this book the first thing I did was come to write a review about it because I thought it was just absolutely fantastic! Not only did this book have an unpredictable and exciting plot, but it is also extremely well written. Too often books sacrifice one for the other. This is the type of book that is completely engrossing and you read from start to finish in one sitting! The whole book is really a load of fun and transports you to Odette's world! The historical portion of the book is obviously well researched and very authentic! Honestly I'm having some trouble expressing how much of a blast this book is! It's just a really good time!!!
Such a great book! It was a very interesting blend of sci-if, historical fiction, action, and romance that I never could have imagined. The author does a great job of making a confusing topic very understandable, exciting, and almost believable. The plot is very original and unpredictable, which makes it very difficult to stop reading! Odette is a very well developed and relatable character, whose feminist ideas are unique and contrast the time period. The historical aspect of the book is obviously very well researched and separates this book from the countless other time traveling books. I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel!
